5 Things You Can Do Now to Prepare Your Skin for Summer

It may not seem like it right now in some parts of the country, but warmer weather is on it’s way. It’s a good time to start prepping your skin for summer and adjusting your care routine to guard against the sun, heat, and exposure to environmental pollutants from being outdoors.

1. Moisturize

Heavy, oil based moisturizers work well in the winter to hydrate, seal in moisture, and soothe chapped skin. During warmer months skin will hold on to moisture more easily, but will also produce more oil. Begin your switch to lightweight, water based moisturizer. You can transition smoothly by applying your lightweight moisturizer in the morning and saving your heavier cream for evening.

2.  Exfoliate

While cold weather requires an increase in exfoliation to slough off dead, dry skin cells, you won’t need to exfoliate as frequently during the summer. In fact, over-exfoliating may make your skin more sensitive to the sun. You can continue to use products that provide gentle exfoliation such as a face wash or serum with Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA). Do make sure to get a good exfoliating treatment like a micropeel before summer fully kicks in.

3.  Protect

Obviously, make sure to up the SPF of your daily UV protection. Make sure it’s at least 50. This is universal and applies to every hue. If you discover that your favorite sunscreen didn’t protect you or you forgot to apply only to be punished with a sunburn, you can book a Celluma LED Light Therapy treatment to help ease the inflammation, pain, and speed up skin repair.

4.  Declutter

Go through your products, including makeup, and throw out anything that is over six months old. Give your makeup applicators a good wash or replace them completely. If you aren’t already wiping down your face rollers, gua sha tools, and cold globes with alcohol, give those a good wipe too.

5.  Refresh Your Mindset

Your skin care isn’t the only thing that could use an update as we approach a new season. With the change of the weather, the longer days, and the proximity to summer (when many people tend to take a break) it’s a great time to re-evaluate your goals to see if you’re happy with the way things are going. Maybe the things you wanted to accomplish last fall or at the beginning of the year have changed. Maybe you want to do more, or do less. Or, maybe you will be surprised to find that you have achieved all of the things you intended to do and more. After all, when we’re happy with ourselves it makes our faces glow!
